Overview

Objective

Develop a native application for the Texas A&M Forest Service, aiming to enable users to effortlessly identify tree species by answering a series of questions and providing photos.

Solution

Implementing an uncomplicated leaf key, users can streamline options for identifying a tree species, and each species within the app will feature a dedicated page containing photos and detailed descriptions.

Discovery

In this phase, I empathize with users, aiming to understand their needs, goals, motivations, pain points, and behaviors.

Better Uderstand The User Based

Who's going to be using the application?

Even though we were targeting the general public, I realized that an application of this nature is most likely going to be used by enthusiasts and a niche user base. Yet I still need to design with the general public in mind.

Market Assessment

A few other tree identification applications are on the market. Most notable:

Trees of Texas - which is a web application by Texas A&M Forest Service.

I incorporated some of the sketches from texastreeid.tamu.edu to identify parts of leaves as well as some of the sketches from the Forest Trees of Texas books.

Define

In this phase, I define the problem based on insights from the empathize phase, synthesizing research findings to understand users' needs and expectations.

Design Proposal

Develop a native application for the Texas A&M Forest Service that allows users to easily identify tree species through a series of questions and photos.

With sufficient information (Who, why, and what I'm solving for), I kicked the ideation process off by developing an architecture that meets user's needs.

I use low-fidelity prototypes to assess the general structure of the application. With little effort, I made any adjustments needed before further implementations.

Ideate

Understanding the users' wants, needs, and expectations, I proceed to generate potential solutions for the defined problem. I explore diverse ideas and concepts without judgment to foster creativity and innovation.

User have the option to  ID there tree through a view options

One of the ways of ID a tree is by its  characteristics (eg. " ype of leaf")

If a user select " type of leaf" as the means to ID his/her tree, then this page will display categories of leaf

Prototype & Testing

In this phase, I create interactive models, gather feedback, and iterate on the design to refine the user experience before development.

Comparative & Explorative Tests

With mid- and high-fidelity prototypes created, I conducted task scenarios and think-aloud tests. These tests revealed small vulnerabilities in the structure of the user interface.

Following a simple leaf key, the user will be able to narrow options to ID a tree species. Each species in the app will have its tree page with photos and descriptions.
